Gastro: How to stop the spread
|
Gastro, tummy bug, rotavirus and norovirus – viral gastroenteritis has many different names. But one thing is for sure – without smart hygiene practices in place, it can spread rapidly through a childcare centre.
Gastroenteritis is a bowel infection, normally caused by a virus, that brings on diarrhea and sometimes vomiting. A young child with gastroenteritis can quickly become dehydrated to the point where hospitalisation is required. Thorough hand hygiene and centre-cleaning practices are the best forms of defence against the illness.

More than 35 million hours of early learning lost to Coronavirus
|
Early learners in New Zealand have lost more than 35 million hours of early education due to the pandemic, according to a recent report by the Ministry of Education. This equates to around 177 hours lost per Auckland child and 108 hours for those living in other parts of the country.
Some sectors of the community have been more impacted than others. The report, which looked into the impacts of Covid-19 on education participation, found that Pacific and Maori children and those from disadvantaged areas have lost more formal education.
In Auckland, children attending services in lower socio-economic areas – low EQI services – lost around 15 hours of early-learning education after the second lockdown lifted, while those attending services in the most advantaged areas lost around six hours.
