What does Montessori method of education mean?

The essence of Montessori education is that every child is allowed to develop naturally at his or her own pace. Children choose from a wide range of self-educating and self-correcting activities, working with each for as long as he or she needs to.

Maria Montessori recognized that children have a natural willingness to explore and that the best motivation for learning is self-motivation.

Our prepared environment caters for the need for each child and is designed to maximize independent learning. Our emphasis is on learning through self-discovery. Children will work at their own pace, choosing their activities, learning concentration, a sense of order in an atmosphere of peace, generosity, order and co-operation.

Our qualified staff, many of whom have Montessori qualifications as well as early childhood qualifications, encourage children to develop independence, co-ordination and fine motor skills. Children also have a chance to develop their five senses using Montessori sensorial apparatus.

Children are introduced to mathematical concepts, reading and writing activities at an early age, if they are interested in these. They are also given an introduction to geography, history and science. We include art activities everyday to encourage the children to express themselves and to enhance their creativity.

Children are never forced to do anything, teachers simply guide them to something that will both stimulate and encourage them.

At BestStart Montessori Flagstaff we encourage children to socialize with their peers. Each day we have ‘circle time’ when we discuss the topic of the week. Children have a chance to do group activities like cooking, craft work, music and movement, and outdoor activities. Children have lots of ‘free time’ too.
